A Long Road to Schengen

Previusly, Cyprus targeted Schengen accession by the end of 2025, however, the timeline has moved to 2026.
According to President Christodoulides, Cyprus will complete all technical and legal preparations by the end of 2025. This timeline sets the stage for formal accession in 2026.
“We will join the Schengen zone in 2026,” Christodoulides remarked. “A huge effort is being made by the end of 2025 from a technical point of view. This is our goal, we will have completed everything we need to do as a state, with the aim of 2026, precisely, for the Republic of Cyprus to join the Schengen zone.”
Moreover, Christodoulides highlighted the “huge effort” being undertaken across state institutions. From border infrastructure to data systems, major upgrades are already in progress.
Importantly, officials are working closely with EU evaluators to ensure compliance with Schengen rules. These steps are crucial, as entry requires unanimous approval from current member states.
